Is the Underdog Mentality Distracting or Motivating the Eagles

It may sound the underdog tag can be a huge thing to motivate the Eagles, but it can also cause for the team to get some emotional distraction. It may be forcing the opponent to dominate them or the identity of the opponent can be too much to overcome at least emotionally.

It may be a kiss of death to some athletes. When focused to score, one can get taken out of the moment. When you are taken out, you can go out and you’re doomed, said Spencer.

The privilege of having the dog masks which the players used through the playoffs may be some of a concern as far as Spencer is concerned. It may because the Eagles appeared to be concerned much about proving themselves to win and may miss out on the important thing to do as of the moment.

The moment might become too big than it is supposed to be. It may come to a point it will become a distraction. It should be minimized by the coaches in the locker room—a lot, said Spencer.

Longshore agreed somewhat. At any level the pressure can be overwhelming if there are no precautions taken.

It is a matter of not changing the right approach to the game. The best thing to do is to keep the emotions in check and keep the mentality in check. There are times the brain is not going to take any change nicely. It is better, said Longshore, to stick to a sort of routine.

Each time you step into the field, it is a different story. Each game is played differently from the last. So the strategy must be focused on who is the opponent and never go seeking to play to the next opponent. The alterations of the focus are based on whom you are playing against, and confidence is a huge key.

It is best, said Longshore, to stay within ourselves. There are things to do at one point that athletes must continue to do. If the Eagles stick to what they have been doing, their routine, and have the right mental state as they take the field, they will be better and proved to themselves they are indeed the winner.

Why do we love the underdog?

Remember the Miracle on Ice? We’ll go back to that memory. But first.

Many teams have played against the New England Patriots before in the Superbowl, and in the last decade, many have lost to them. So, it is pretty much easy not to expect the Philadelphia Eagles to claw their way and win the Superbowl.

The underdog mentality has this eerie duality. It can start as a disadvantage. After all, the team is expected to lose. Yet, there is this glimmer of hope they can pull the upset and win. Although, we all know this happens rarely, if not, none at all.

Let us tow back to the Miracle on Ice and the fictional Rocky movies. We all know how they overcome the odds stacked against them. Although we need to remember, Rocky lost in the first movie.

There is a study saying being the underdog has its emotional element to it as well. Right at bat, we root for the underdog because we want for the things to be different. We are excited about that. A Washburn University and University of Nebraska-Lincoln study in 2009 said there is always a balance to try and achieve the equity based on personal experience.

A 2008 study by University of Richmond said we all are small children at the start and we have to deal with anyone that is superior. We all experienced about the pains of struggle. We, on our own, said the study, are underdogs in that sense and for any effects.

Longshore has been a long time fan of the Eagles, as far as she can remember since when her family moved to Philadelphia. She said we can relate ourselves to be an underdog with the struggles we experienced as children. She said, “if they can do it, then why can’t we overcome our own adversity?”

The underdog mentality rests on the idea of “nothing to lose” and “playing for fun”. When a team is not expected to win; the pressure to win is on the supposed dominant team. The notion is really in our heads. It is really not real. However, when we think something is real, it become real. We want to do the things that people don’t expect from us. A team is supposed to perform better and play loose as there is no pressure to win and there is no expectation to march on to victory. The underdog mentality can become a winning attitude and toughen the mental reserve.

There are times in our lives, we need to embrace the underdog mentality to win.

There is no way we can avoid rooting for the underdog, she said. The reason we rejoice in David’s victory against Goliath. We all want to see someone to win, even if the person is not supposed to win at all, or even reach the Superbowl.

“We like to root for the underdogs because we like to root for ourselves,” she said.
